Joan Steacy's Studio and Blog

Welcome to my blog! I want to share what I've been up to lately. The image above, which is the wraparound cover for Scrappy Jack a book I wrote and illustrated. It's a biography of my dad, who had plenty of stories to tell and he lived to be 100 years old. The original version called "So, That's That!"was given to him on his 100th birthday many years ago. That's me and my brother, dad, and two sisters in the junkyard where I grew up. The best playground any kid could ask for!

About me.

I'm a visual storyteller who loves to draw and read books that make me think and wonder about our world, and the people in it. I grew up in southern Ontario, and in 1987 we packed up our two boys and moved from Toronto to Victoria, BC. My artistic career started at an early age, when I learned how to hold a pencil crayon. I have since graduating from Sheridan College, The Ontario College of Art & Design, and the University of Victoria. I taught at Camosun College from 2011-2019 in the Comics and Graphic Novels Program that I co-created with my husband Ken Steacy a comic book legend! He taught me everything I needed to know about how to make comics...

AURORA BOREALICE

AURORA BOREALICE

Aurora Borealice is a biographic memoir that chronicles my quest to find a voice in a rapidly changing technological world. It begins in the early 70’s, when I met a number of people who dramatically shaped my life: Ken Steacy, a crazy comic book artist, Eric McLuhan, an inspiring professor at art college, and media guru Marshall McLuhan...

Conundrum Press has picked up Aurora Borealice for distribution starting from the spring of 2019.
